QR table ordering: how it works and how to set it up

Short answer

With QR table ordering, each table has its own code. Guests scan it, order and sometimes pay on their phone, and the order goes straight to the POS and kitchen. It cuts waiting and order mistakes at busy times. It works best when the QR codes can be changed without reprinting and when orders land in the same system as the counter.

How QR table ordering works

  1. Each table has its own QR code, so the order already knows the table number.
  2. The guest scans the code and sees the live menu, with add-ons and sold-out items.
  3. The order goes to the POS and a kitchen ticket prints automatically.
  4. The guest pays at the counter, or on their phone if online payment is enabled.

Pros and cons

Setup checklist

  • One code per table, plus separate codes for takeaway and posters.
  • Codes whose destination you can change later (menu, WiFi, reviews), so stickers never need reprinting.
  • Menu that switches automatically by time of day (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
  • Kitchen tickets and drink tickets printing to the right stations.
  • SST and service charge applied correctly for dine-in.
  • A way for guests to join your membership while they order, so the visit earns points.
  • Scan counts per table, poster and outlet, so you can see which codes work.
FAQ

Questions answered

Can I change what a printed QR code opens?

Yes, if the QR system uses dynamic codes. You change the destination, such as the menu, WiFi page or review page, in the back office and the printed sticker stays the same.

Do guests have to pay on their phone?

No. Many restaurants let guests order by QR and pay at the counter. Online payment at the table is optional.
